TYSHEA POPE
4-Year Term General Election Candidate
-
Interviewer:
So, Tyshea, if you could change one thing, just one, one thing about DPSCD tomorrow, like an immediate change, what would it be?
Tyshea Pope:
I would really, really, really like for our babies to have, equal access to everything. So the opportunities of I shouldn't be able to choose based on my zip code or based on the school. If all schools kind of look identical, then you don't have people playing the game of changing addresses to give their babies, again, the opportunity to have the exposure to finding out who they are.
Interviewer:
Yeah.
Tyshea Pope:
So for me, I would like for, our career pathways to go down exposure to at least eighth grade. Again, so many students get into high school and they're still trying to figure out what they want to do and have that exposure piece. But if we expose them early. So I say that because my son is currently in school for HVAC, and he said, “Mom, I feel like, that's kind of not a good choice.” “You know, my brother's in school to be a doctor,” and in school we promote doctors, lawyers, police officers, all those things. But now we get into, the, the HVAC, the plumbers. Now we're speaking of it, but getting them earlier to see that those are in demand. They are really good careers. Again, the conversation you and I were speaking about is just having exposure to the different opportunities early. You're not just limited.
Interviewer:
“When I was a student, I wish my school had...”
Tyshea Pope:
I mean, back then, my schools kind of had all the things. However, later on in life, I got into dental assisting. So I do believe that if I had exposure, I wouldn't have been as curious as to which route I was taking. I guess more hands on learning.
Interviewer:
That's good.
Tyshea Pope:
I'm definitely a hands on learner So, yeah. So them being able to help me discover who I was, and the routes to take early on definitely would have helped define a little earlier instead of later on.
Interviewer:
Got it. So all about exposure.
Tyshea Pope:
Exposure absolutely helps plant that seed early.
