2026 DETROIT SCHOOL BOARD · CANDIDATE VIDEO SERIES
ALIYA MOORE
Partial Term General Election Candidate
-
Aliya Moore: I really feel like the biggest problem is the lack of opportunities. Okay. We had over $1.27 billion in Covid funding the district. We have a regular budget of over $1 billion, and we have many grants that have been given from the state and other entities.
But it doesn't necessarily reflect to me in the classroom. I do believe Detroit Public Schools Community District should have invested that money and kind of expanding our core catalog, which would mean offering our students more, and we would attract a students from, you know, suburban areas, you know, private schools and different things because of what we offer. So really, to me, it's the missed opportunities.
And we are Detroit Public Schools community district. But I don't feel we have enough community partners that can help our students, either academically or with more electives.
I have a 11th grader coming up. Okay. And even with my first daughter that graduated in 2020, she looks at her sisters, you know, education as if it is slighted. And I know for sure I'm a 80s baby. So our curriculum, our system was a lot better and stronger.
So when you have proficiency rates of like 5%, two and 3% increases, something is wrong with the curriculum. It's not our students that are not bright, but I believe it's the information and it's the tools. It's the professional development. It's a lot of the lacks and it shows in the curriculum and the results. So in order to get better results, I do think the district needs to visit the curriculum to see what is working and what can be tweaked. But I do think with the rates that we've had in the last nine years is definitely a problem.
Interviewer: “As a student, I wish my school had...” Finish that sentence.
Aliya Moore: I don't mean to sound repetitious, but I wish we had more opportunities because, you know, people are saying now, okay, DPS is paying the students, but you have to realize, if you're not as a district, going to really go deep in to solve the problems of chronic absenteeism and just the interests of our students, you know, you to me, you might as well pay them because it's their money anyway.
And if you're going to continue, in my opinion, to neglect the missed opportunities, then if I was a student, you know, the money is an incentive to come, but it would be so much better if I can go in and be able to cook, you know, make jewelry. So, you know, all of the interests that our children have, but they're limited to only the quote unquote specialty schools.
