2026 DETROIT SCHOOL BOARD · CANDIDATE VIDEO SERIES
KATRINA BROWN
4-Year Term General Election Candidate
-
Interviewer:
If elected to the school board, what will you fight for?
Katrina Brown:
If elected to the school board, I would fight that all students are treated equally. As far as every student being able to read, write and comprehend. All students get the education they deserve, making sure that their IEPs are met, all of their needs are met, that they get the social work services, OT services, and those would be some of the things that I would fight for. I am a lifelong advocate of of DPS. I'm a teacher, a former teacher, 28 years I've taught for the Detroit Public Schools. I'm also a mandated reporter. And some of the things that I saw, teachers have been afraid to speak up. For years. I've seen students being abused, and one of the things that I've done been an advocate for students is with the water. Back in 2016, I did a science experiment at John R. King School, we noticed that the water was yellow and I bought the kit from Amazon. We came back with the water levels were very high for lead and water. I sent those readings over to the State of Michigan, and because of that, we were able to get clean, fresh water for every student throughout the school. In 2023 at Moses Field School, I was moved over, retaliated against for speaking up. They moved me over to the special Education department. I went back and got another master's degree and while teaching at Moses Field, students were being abused. They were being choked and it was a big cover up from the top to the bottom. I exposed that to the district. So I'm a person that will stand up. Will do the right thing. Will make sure that your kid gets the education that they deserve and they need. And also I would also fight for that teachers are not afraid to speak up because in this district, teachers are in fear of being retaliated against and being sent to the retention center, which is better known as teacher jail. So we have a lot of great staff and teachers at DPS, but a lot of people are scared to speak up. And so that's one thing that I would always advocate for the students. I've done it for over 25 years. My record speaks for itself. You can Google me or fact check and you'll find out that what I said is true. I am an advocate and your child needs will be met and there will be change on the board.
Interviewer:
“When I was a student, I wish my school had...”
Katrina Brown:
More mental health resources. And that's very important for students. We have a high chronic absenteeism rate, and a lot of students don't have a where they feel comfortable of speaking to someone. So when I wish back then we had more mental health resources and I hope by you electing me for the board, we'll make sure that we make sure that your child’s mental health is a priority.
