2026 DETROIT SCHOOL BOARD · CANDIDATE VIDEO SERIES
PHILIP LLOYD
4-Year Term General Election Candidate
-
Interviewer: In one word. What is your top priority for the district’s students, and how would you go about prioritizing that? Just in one word? If you can, you can elaborate more, but—
Philip Lloyd: So, support. I believe that they need a lot of support and a lot of different areas. And just making sure that kids are the focus. I'm in hospitality. So you say customers is the reason that we're there. The students are the reason that the school district is here, and there's a lot of areas they need support.
So I just want to be able to come in and give my expertise in leadership and be a part of change to try to not change so much the culture, but just kind of develop and enhance what's already there.
So sometimes people say things about the food that's in the school district specifically. That's my big thing. Just I think every kid should have a nutritious, quality meal. So just making sure that some of those things are taken care of. I've been in hospitality for over 20 years now. Dealing with unions and different projects and companies that will actually give the support coming in to distribute the food. So I want to see if I can come in and help change that culture that's there. Not saying that there's anything wrong with the food that's there, but things can always be better.
Interviewer: Anything else that you would add to that?
Philip Lloyd: So secondary literacy and there would be outside groups coming in for the three things that are on my mind coming in. My wife is an English teacher. And so we talk about the literacy in the city specifically. So that's a big focus for us. She recently did a thousand books for black girls, and so we pass out books every summer. There are her nonprofit picnic. And so we wanted to try to bring that same effort into the school district. She's really big on trying to incorporate more libraries for the district.
Interviewer: Okay, I understand.
Philip Lloyd: That most of the libraries have gone away. I'm not a DSC alumni.
Interviewer: Okay.
Philip Lloyd: My wife is and my daughter will be again. She starts pre-K this fall, so that's very nervous and nerve wracking. So just want to be part of the change to come in and said of making complaints do something about it.
Interviewer: “As a student, I wish my school had...”
Philip Lloyd: It's hard for me to say because the school I went to, a school district, we didn't lack for many things. It wasn't very upscale in a sense. So I went to Willow Run Public Schools in Ypsilanti. We had AC, we had a great quality lunch program. We had after school programs, we had sports. We had all kinds of sports. We had rowing, we had robotics.
Having family that's in Detroit that went to DPSCD Schools and being here experiencing -- my goddaughter’s a senior in DPSCD. Just knowing some of the program things that they don't have and understanding the lack of processes for them to get these things. I understand that some schools can't have these things based on attendance or what not, but there should be a way to bring them to the school, whether they become a club.
Instead of complaining about it, just want to be able to come in and push and have a different viewpoint than somebody is like a career politician, someone that's, you know, community-focused and focused on just betterment for the kids.
